Martha Stewart Shines Content Spotlight

On the Wednesday, November 16, 2005 episode of the new Martha show, media mogel Martha Stewart proclaimed she wanted to be “the first person on television” to talk about the importance of Generation C, the content generation.

“Generation C,” Stewart said, “has nothing to do with your age. It has to do with what you want to know and where you want to learn it. It’s what people do every day, look for content, for information.”

While Stewart’s Generation C elevator pitch still needs some work, the fact that content and its impact on customer experience is being recognized by someone as powerful and influential as Stewart speaks volumes. Stewart told her viewers that she learned about the importance of content and Generation C during a meeting with marketing and communiction students the day before.

According to analysts at TrendWatching.com, Generation C “is not about a new niche generation of youngsters born between March 12, 1988 and April 24, 1993; the C stands for CONTENT, and anyone with even a tiny amount of creative talent can (and probably will) be part of this not-so-exclusive trend.”

“The GENERATION C phenomenon captures the an avalanche of consumer generated ‘content’ that is building on the Web, adding tera-peta bytes of new text, images, audio and video on an ongoing basis,” TrendWatching.com says. “The two main drivers? (1) The creative urges each consumer undeniably possesses. We’re all artists, but until now we neither had the guts nor the means to go all out. (2) The manufacturers of content-creating tools, who relentlessly push us to unleash that creativity, using—of course—their ever cheaper, ever more powerful gadgets and gizmos. Instead of asking consumers to watch, to listen, to play, to passively consume, the race is on to get them to create, to produce, and to participate.”
