November 18, 2005 Blog No Comments

The findings of the industry’s first major study of white paper writers are revealed in a new report from WhitePaperSource.com. The 2005 White Paper Writer Industry Survey (free download until December 31, 2005) provides 42 pages of insight into how white papers are written, distributed, structured, and billed.

The report covers:

  • The types of white papers written
  • The length of white papers
  • How much time is spent producing white papers
  • The use of special features (such as abstracts) in white papers
  • The processes involved in writing white papers
  • Why white papers are produced
  • How white papers are distributed
  • Philosophies adopted when writing white papers
  • The difficulty associated with different parts of the writing process
  • Challenges faced by white paper writers
  • The differences between independent and in-house writers
  • How independent writers charge for their services

Gordon Graham, editor of SoftwareCEO.com described the report as a resource that “objectively confirms much of what many experts suspected, but delivers a few surprises as well. Both as an industry journalist and as a white paper writer, I was intrigued by the results. I hope it becomes an annual publication.”
