Age of Internet Users

    • 18-29 that use the Internet: 84%
    • 30-49 that use the Internet: 83%
    • 50-64 that use the Internet: 71%
    • 65+ that use the Internet: 30%

Race/Ethnicity of Internet Users

  • Percentage of white/non-Hispanics that use the Internet: 73%
  • Percentage of black/non-Hispanics that use the Internet: 60%
  • Percentage of English speaking Hispanics that use the Internet: 79%

Where they live

  • Percentage of those that reside in:

    • urban areas that use the Internet: 75%
    • suburban areas that use the Internet: 73%
    • rural areas that use the Internet: 65%

Educational attainment

  • Percentage of those whose have:

    • less than a high school education that use the Internet: 38%
    • a high school education that use the Internet: 62%
    • some college education that use the Internet: 82%
    • a college education+ that use the Internet: 92%

Household income

  • Percentage of those who earn:

    • less than $30,000 per/yr that use the Internet: 54%
    • $30,000-$49,999 per/yr that use the Internet: 78%
    • $50,000-$74,999 per/yr that use the Internet: 87%
    • $75,000+ per/yr that use the Internet: 94%

Pew also collects data on Daily Internet activities. On average, about 94 million U.S. adults use the Internet. Here are some of the things they do while online.

  • Percentage of those who report using:

    • the Internet “yesterday”: 65%
    • email “yesterday”: 52%
    • a search engine “yesterday”: 41%
    • instant messaging “yesterday”: 12%
    • text messages via cellular phone “yesterday”: 11%
    • a blog “yesterday”: 7%
    • a chat or online discussion forum “yesterday”: 5%
    • online classified ads “yesterday”: 4%
    • social or professional networking websites “yesterday”: 3%
    • travel websites “yesterday”: 3%
    • product, service or people rating websites “yesterday”: 3%
