How Widely Is DITA Being Used? And For What?

A recent DITA-Users Group poll asked members: “How widely is DITA used?” The poll was not scientific and yielded only 56 responses from over 700 group members.

  • Not started but consider using DITA (either DTD or Schema), 15 votes (26.79%)
  • Not started but consider using DITA DTD, 9 votes (16.07%)

    • Who? Manufacturer of hardware and software for telecommunications providers
    • For what? two pilots: (1) Hardware manuals, (2) online help systems for software
  • Not started but consider using DITA Schema, 2 votes (3.57%)
  • Started using DITA DTD in prototypes, 12 votes, 21.43%

    • Who? Heavy industry
    • For what? Maintenance and parts information
    • Who? Semiconductor
    • For what? Semiconductor product specifications
    • Who? Consumer products
    • For what? Technical R&D reports
  • Started using DITA Schema in prototypes, 2 votes (3.57%)

    • Who? Aerospace & Defense
    • For what? Engineering standards
  • Started using DITA DTD in production, 15 votes (26.79%)

    • Who? Automotive R&D
    • For what? Internal business process documentation
    • Who? Semiconductor equipment manufacturers
    • For what? All manuals and guides
    • Who? Computer manufacturers
    • For what? Hardware documentation
  • Started using DITA Schema in production, 1 votes (1.79%)

    • Who? Software companies
    • For what? User guides, online help
