Excellent article. I have gone through exactly this in the past three weeks (including purchasing a new home!) and nothing can quite prepare you for the shock and grief.

I don’t yet know what the competition is like for jobs here in Sydney (Australia), but I started a LinkedIn profile last week and plan to take on many of your suggestions as my search continues. I know something will turn up in time, I just have to deal with the uncomfortable uncertainty in the interim and, like yourself, put aside the little things I took for granted.

Best of luck to you Max, and thank you for posting such a frank account of your experience

"Learn some simple methods of authoring content using the Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) and XML.”

Would you please provide some examples of how to obtain this type of experience? I’m having trouble figuring out where to learn DITA methods. I am just trying to become familiar with it to make myself more marketable. My experience consists of writing online Help files with RoboHelp, and users guides and other documentation with Framemaker.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Excellent post. First one I’ve seen of this nature.
I was laid-off at the onset of the Dot-Com bust in ‘01. Again during the middle of the bust in ‘02. Was able to find something else good/better quickly in those cases. But after the 3rd layoff in ‘03 no-one was hiring. This was the worst.
Through networking I was able to string together a series of odd-ball web projects for a year and picked up some new skills that helped contribute to landing my current job. (Don’t forget CraigsList as a source for leads).
Unlikely sources helped along the way. My network helped me land an interview for a job I was way over qualified for - w/ nothing to lose, I gave it a shot. They didn’t hire me. But one of the interviewers remembered me years later and we’re now co-workers together at a new company.

Great article, Max. Thank you so much for sharing your experiences from the lay off. Your lessons learned are invaluable to both the unemployed and employed.

I wish you the best as you search for the next big thing.

Great piece Max. Shortly after my being laid off, I relocated to Portland. I worked temp jobs, lived cheaply and network through various activities I enjoy, like Landmark Education. Through that I met another out of work executive and we traded resumes. He then put me in touch with someone else who believed in the power of networking and who happened to be looking for someone in my feild. And TaDA! I’m now making more money than I ever had, I can easily pay my bills, and even bought a decent car and moved into an apartment with a view (all things I had on my vision board, ala The Secret).

So, absolutley! If you find yourself laid off, get out there and tell everyone and anyone. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start all over again. If I can do, you sure can!!!!

Searching for a suitable company in today’s market is a different ball game in relationship with 10 - 15 years ago.

Understanding internet tools, professional websites (i.e.: Linked In) and social networks (i.e.: Facebook) has become critical factor to anyone’s success.

Max’s write up was excellent done and an valuable help anyone seeeking a new opportunity or challenge.

Max,

This is a fine piece of writing and very useful to the current and future unemployed.

I just rewrote my brother-in-law’s resume as he was let go from a large construction firm in Philadelphia after 15 years of loyal service. I sent him your article because you reinforce the points I’ve been emphasizing with him about using Web 2.0 tools like Linkedin to help with the search.

I also sent it to the Washington D.C. Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication and suggested they link to it.

I especially like he tip about letting people know you are searching for work. I’ve found good jobs that way many times.

Good luck in the search and may your new job pay well above your prior job.
