This is mainly for those who target the US market.
For those wanting to expand abroad, hence will need to have content in different languages, please glance at the following EU report on the importance of translation before relying on automated translation available on-line
http://ec.europa.eu/dgs/translation/publications/studies/size_of_language_industry_en.pdf
Apparently, saving pennies in translation might end up costing you a lot

Good article; thanks for putting it together. I worked for a major insurance company in IL(their name rhymes with "great charm") and they were pursuing accessible design with commitment six years ago; at the time I thought they were on the vanguard but it seems lots of "diverse" and "socially conscious" organizations have failed to follow suit and are still dropping the ball on accessibility...and losing money and customers as a result.

One way that information architects and analysts can advocate for accessibility while minimizing the drama is by using personas that include users with special accessibility need.

[...] Why You Should Adopt An ‘Accessible Content Strategy’Before diving too deeply into this discussion about the need for an accessible content strategy, I have a confession to make. I have never worked on a project in which content accessibility was included in the requirements. You may think that makes me a little bit like those characters played by Fred Willard and Catherine O’Hara in the movie “Waiting for Guffman”; that owned a travel agency, but had never left the town in which they were born.
It is difficult to promote Web accessibility if the laws is the only reason. I think We should put it as a human rights on the Web. Some questionable SEO strategies usually far more easy to explain in an accessibility point of view. More logical rather than guesssing the algorithm to cheat users.
