Kirsty Taylor: Looking Forward To My First Localization World

October 6-8, 2010 I’ll be in Seattle for my first ever localization conference — Localization World. I’m really looking forward to it (cliche, but it’s true!). Earlier this year, I was given responsibility for coordinating my company’s translation and localization projects. I have so much to learn. At the conference, I’m hoping to meet other in-house translation coordinators, as well as localization vendors, to learn what products and services they offer to help an organization like mine localize software in up to 16 languages.

To get ready for the conference, I’ve gone through the conference program and highlighted the sessions that I simply must attend. But, making my conference schedule is harder than I thought; several sessions that I want to attend occur simultaneously.

Let’s see. Introduction to Localization pre-conference session with Daniel Goldschmidt and Angelika Zerfaß is an absolute must! Start with the basics on day one. Attend sessions that cover more advanced concepts on day two and three.

How should I create and maintain a localization team? with Danica Brinton and Christina Helmke sounds good. As does How to optimize the global content supply chain, discussion with experts Rahel Bailie, David Filip, Bryan Schnabel, Richard Sikes.

An area I’ve struggled with is developing an RFP to select the right localization vendor. This session with Silvia Avary-Silveira from Symantec should help me get started.

There’s been a lot of talk about machine translation, so I think it makes sense to attend both Translation in the 21st Century with Jaap van der Meer from Translation Automation User Society (TAUS) and the panel discussion on machine translation with panelists from Cisco, Autodesk, Symantec and Adobe.

And there’s more… Sessions on Google Translate and the Google translation toolkit, global user-generated content, community translation, managing mobs and content culturalization, multilingual voiceovers, and more. Take a peek at the roster for yourself.

This is so going to be worth the 16+ hours of flying it’ll take to get from Australia to Seattle.
